The NDP celebration event organized by the Singapore Association of Monash was a successful one. It was graced by an unexpected turn-up of 80 people, most clothed in splashes of red and white. There was the typical queue for free food, but the Singaporeans were not to blame because a delightful array of local delights had been catered specially for the occasion. A barbeque pit alongside the catered food was churning out batches of honey soy chicken wings, sambal prawns and cuttlefish. After everyone had had their fill, a short and humorous presentation on what was uniquely Singaporean was delivered to the audience. This was followed by a quiz to engage the audience and distribute the goodie bags that were provided. Last but not least, the NDP telecast was screened. At this point of time, many had their eyes glued onto the large screen, but there were also groups of people just mingling with each other, or playing games like carom on the sidelines. Friendships were forged and strengthened, and the sense of community and identity was definitely present. It was a memorable evening to say the least, and the evening drew to a close all too soon.
